Organized in 1884 for the German Lutherans living in Tacoma, St. Paul Lutheran was one of the first Lutheran congregations in the entire Western region. History oozes from the building. Over 135 years later, the congregation continues to thrive around God’s Word.
Traditional in structure, the building contains multiple gorgeous features, such as Povey Brothers stained glass windows, a pipe organ, and old growth wood trim. It also integrates new technology like dual projectors and screens into the facility.
The St. Paul “Family” is made up of folks of all ages, races and backgrounds. Some have been a part of the congregation their entire lives; others are newer to the family. Though there’s not a perfect person in the bunch, they truly do love the Lord and each other.
Our worship life always revolves around God’s life-changing Word. Though generally more “traditional” in worship style, we include great variety in the elements of worship and are constantly exploring the most beneficial ways to praise the Lord.
The church building is just south and up-the-hill from downtown Tacoma. It is on the corner of Tacoma Avenue, South and South 27th Street (2553 Tacoma Ave. S.).
St. Paul’s is a part of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS). The synod is theologically “conservative,” and has congregations around the world.
